Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act - August 6

In 1965, a group of peaceful demonstrators attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery, AL in support of equal voting rights; but were met with violence and bloodshed – widely known as Bloody Sunday.
In 2013, the United States Supreme Court invalidated the Voting Rights Act and effectively ended the protections against racially discriminatory voting laws.
Today as we commemorate, know your rights and find out if your senator supports the Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure the right to vote for all Americans.  #AKA1908 #AKASLEAD #VotingRightsAct

Women's Equality Day - Anniversary of Womwn'a Suffrage Act - August 26

On August 26, 1920, women won the right to vote with the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution by the U.S. Congress.
"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex..."
The ratification of the amendment enabled 23 million women to vote.  However, the 19th amendment failed to enfranchise women of color, though thousands were involved in the movement.  The voting rights for minority women were finally granted with the passage of the Voter Rights Act of 1965. #AKA1908 #AKASLEAD #VotingRightsAct
